🔥 Old Testament Warnings Against Psychics, Mediums & Divination

1. Leviticus 19:31 (NIV)
“Do not turn to mediums or seek out spiritists, for you will be defiled by them. I am the Lord your God.”

2. Leviticus 20:6 (NIV)
“I will set my face against anyone who turns to mediums and spiritists to prostitute themselves by following them, and I will cut them off from their people.”

3. Leviticus 20:27 (NIV)
“A man or woman who is a medium or spiritist among you must be put to death. You are to stone them; their blood will be on their own heads.”

4. Deuteronomy 18:10–12 (NIV)
“Let no one be found among you who sacrifices their son or daughter in the fire, who practices divination or sorcery, interprets omens, engages in witchcraft,
or casts spells, or who is a medium or spiritist or who consults the dead.
Anyone who does these things is detestable to the Lord…”

5. Exodus 22:18 (KJV)
“Thou shalt not suffer a witch to live.”

6. Isaiah 8:19 (NIV)
“When someone tells you to consult mediums and spiritists, who whisper and mutter, should not a people inquire of their God?
Why consult the dead on behalf of the living?”

7. Isaiah 19:3 (NIV)
“The Egyptians will lose heart, and I will bring their plans to nothing;
they will consult the idols and the spirits of the dead, the mediums and the spiritists.”

8. Micah 5:12 (NIV)
“I will destroy your witchcraft and you will no longer cast spells.”
🔸 Why it matters: Even in future prophetic judgment, God promises to remove witchcraft and spells from His people — a sign of spiritual purification.

9. Nahum 3:4 (NIV)
“…all because of the wanton lust of a prostitute, alluring, the mistress of sorceries, who enslaved nations by her prostitution and peoples by her witchcraft.”
🔸 Why it matters: Witchcraft and sorcery are linked with seduction, deception, and the downfall of entire nations.

10. Malachi 3:5 (NIV)
“‘So I will come to put you on trial. I will be quick to testify against sorcerers…’ says the Lord Almighty.”
🔸 Why it matters: Sorcerers are included among those God will judge, grouped with adulterers and liars — showing how serious this is in His eyes.

11. Deuteronomy 13:1–3 (NIV)
“If a prophet, or one who foretells by dreams, appears among you and announces a sign or wonder,
and if the sign or wonder spoken of takes place, and the prophet says, ‘Let us follow other gods’… you must not listen.”
🔸 Why it matters: Even if someone predicts accurately, if they lead you away from God, it’s forbidden. This applies to psychics who seem “accurate” but do not point to Jesus.

12. Jeremiah 14:14 (NIV)
“The prophets are prophesying lies in my name. I have not sent them… They are prophesying to you false visions, divinations, idolatries, and the delusions of their own minds.”
🔸 Why it matters: Not all “visions” or “prophecies” are from God — many are delusions or false spiritual sources.

13. Zechariah 10:2 (NIV)
“The idols speak deceitfully, diviners see visions that lie; they tell dreams that are false, they give comfort in vain.”
🔸 Why it matters: Psychic-type visions and dreams are often lies and empty comfort compared to God’s truth.

14. Ezekiel 13:6–9 (NIV)
“Their visions are false and their divinations a lie… because you led my people astray… I am against you.”
🔸 Why it matters: God directly condemns those who claim spiritual insight without His Spirit — including psychics and false prophets.

15. Daniel 2:27–28 (NIV)
“No wise man, enchanter, magician or diviner can explain… but there is a God in heaven who reveals mysteries.”
🔸 Why it matters: It clearly contrasts human “magic” with God’s true wisdom. Only God reveals mysteries, not psychics.

📖 Examples of Occult Practices Condemned

  1. 2 Kings 21:6 (NIV)

“He sacrificed his own son in the fire, practiced divination, sought omens, and consulted mediums and spiritists.
He did much evil in the eyes of the Lord, arousing his anger.”

  2. 2 Chronicles 33:6 (NIV)

“He sacrificed his children in the fire in the Valley of Ben Hinnom, practiced divination and witchcraft, sought omens,
and consulted mediums and spiritists. He did much evil in the eyes of the Lord, arousing his anger.”

  3. 1 Samuel 28:7–20 (Summary)
King Saul consults the witch of Endor to summon the prophet Samuel’s spirit, which was a sin and led to God’s judgment upon him.
    See especially:

    • 1 Samuel 28:7 – “Seek me a woman that hath a familiar spirit...”

    • 1 Chronicles 10:13–14 – “Saul died because he was unfaithful to the Lord... and did not inquire of the Lord, but consulted a medium for guidance.”

🚫 New Testament Teachings Against Sorcery and Occult Practices

1. Acts 8:9–13 – Simon the Sorcerer Repents
A man named Simon had practiced sorcery and amazed the people of Samaria. They called him “the Great Power of God,” but when he saw the true power of the Gospel through Philip’s preaching, he believed and was baptized.
🔸 Why it matters: Even those deep in deception can repent when they see the real power of God.

2. Acts 16:16–18 – Paul Casts Out a Spirit of Divination
A slave girl with a demonic spirit could predict the future and made money for her masters through fortune-telling. Paul, grieved by the spirit, commanded it to come out of her in Jesus' name—and it did.
🔸 Why it matters: Divination is not a gift from God—it’s a demonic influence that must be cast out.

3. Acts 19:18–20 – Believers Burn Their Sorcery Scrolls
Many new believers confessed their past sins. Those who had practiced magic brought their spell books and burned them publicly. The word of the Lord spread powerfully as a result.
🔸 Why it matters: Genuine repentance leads people to destroy anything tied to the occult or magic.

4. Galatians 5:19–21 – Witchcraft Is a Work of the Flesh
The works of the flesh include sexual sin, idolatry, and witchcraft. Paul warns that those who live like this will not inherit God’s kingdom.
🔸 Why it matters: Witchcraft is not just wrong—it’s spiritually deadly.

5. Acts 8:18–20 – Simon Tries to Buy God’s Power
When Simon saw the Holy Spirit given through the apostles, he offered them money to get the same power. Peter rebuked him harshly, saying, “May your money perish with you!”
🔸 Why it matters: God's power is a gift, not something that can be bought, manipulated, or controlled.

6. Acts 13:6–10 – Paul Rebukes a False Prophet and Sorcerer
Paul confronted a Jewish sorcerer named Elymas who tried to keep people from believing. Paul called him a “child of the devil” and struck him blind for his deceit.
🔸 Why it matters: God exposes and judges false prophets who use sorcery to resist the Gospel.

7. Revelation 9:21 – Refusal to Repent from Magic Arts
Even after great plagues, people still did not repent of their murders, sorcery, sexual sin, or thefts.
🔸 Why it matters: Clinging to sin, including magic arts, brings judgment when repentance is rejected.

8. Revelation 21:8 – Sorcerers Face the Lake of Fire
Those who are cowardly, unbelieving, immoral, murderers, sorcerers, and liars will be thrown into the lake of fire. This is the second death.
🔸 Why it matters: Practicing magic arts leads to eternal separation from God.

9. Revelation 22:14–15 – Sorcerers Are Kept Out of Heaven
Those who obey God will enter the gates of the holy city. But outside are the sorcerers, murderers, idolaters, and all who love lies.
🔸 Why it matters: Those who persist in sin—like magic and lies—will not enter God’s kingdom.

Conclusion: The Stricter Judgment for Those Who Practice or Seek Witchcraft, Divination, and Sorcery

The Bible is clear: those who engage in witchcraft, divination, sorcery, and the occult—whether directly or indirectly—face not only spiritual danger but stricter judgment. This is not simply about “harmless magic” or “spiritual gifts from the universe.” It is a rebellion against the living God, an act of war against His kingdom, and a dangerous alliance with the forces of darkness.

Why is the judgment stricter?

Because those who practice these things often do so knowingly. Even if they don’t fully understand the spiritual implications, they have chosen to seek power, knowledge, or control outside of God’s will, which is the very definition of idolatry and rebellion.

The spiritual realm is real. We are not just flesh and blood—we are in a battle, and those who use dark arts, cast spells, summon spirits, or tell fortunes are interacting with demonic forces, whether they admit it or not.

Ephesians 6:12“For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.”

Witches, warlocks, psychics, mediums, and other occult practitioners often position themselves as healers or guides. But the source of their power is not from God. It is deceptive and demonic, masquerading as light.

2 Corinthians 11:14-15“And no wonder, for Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light. It is not surprising, then, if his servants masquerade as servants of righteousness.”

God warned His people from the beginning never to consult with mediums, necromancers, or fortune-tellers (Leviticus 19:31, Deuteronomy 18:10-12). That command has not changed. Seeking out tarot readings, horoscopes, spiritual energy sessions, or channeling messages from “spirit guides” is a spiritual violation and an invitation to deception.

Isaiah 8:19“When someone tells you to consult mediums and spiritists, who whisper and mutter, should not a people inquire of their God? Why consult the dead on behalf of the living?”

This verse hits home: why are we going to the counterfeit when we have direct access to the Living God through Jesus Christ?

Those who willingly lead others astray through sorcery or promote spiritual practices outside of Christ are doing so with full awareness that they are operating in a realm God has forbidden. That’s why Scripture often places witchcraft in the same category as murder, idolatry, and sexual immorality—sins that corrupt the soul and resist repentance.

And those who go to these people for insight or power—whether out of curiosity, fear, or desperation—are partnering with their rebellion. Just as Saul was condemned by God for consulting a medium (1 Samuel 28), anyone who seeks guidance from the occult rather than the Holy Spirit is placing themselves under deception and judgment.

1 Samuel 15:23“For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry.”

⚠️ Final Warning

There is no such thing as “good magic” or “light witchcraft.” All power that is not submitted to Christ is ultimately from the enemy. Witchcraft and spiritual rebellion do not just “delay blessings”—they open the door to destruction and eternal separation from God.

God is merciful and forgiving, but He also is holy and will not be mocked. Those who persist in these practices without repentance are walking a path that leads to judgment, not enlightenment.

Hebrews 10:26-27“If we deliberately keep on sinning after we have received the knowledge of the truth, no sacrifice for sins is left, but only a fearful expectation of judgment and of raging fire that will consume the enemies of God.”

🕊️ Call to Repentance and Freedom

If you have ever participated in witchcraft, sorcery, or sought guidance from the occult—even if it seemed harmless—repent now. Jesus has the power to set you free completely. Burn the books, delete the apps, renounce the lies, and break the ties.

There is no spiritual gift, no vision, no secret knowledge that compares to knowing Jesus Christ and walking in the power of the Holy Spirit.

John 8:36“So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.”
